Instead of replacing the heavily scratched glass—a process that would have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars—we resurfaced it to like-new clarity, improving the visitor experience and preserving the exhibit’s value.

Penguin Enclosure: A Unique Challenge with Cool Perks

Embarking on the SeaWorld penguin enclosure project in San Diego was a refreshing change. Like all projects, it came with unique challenges—but it also had some rare perks.

One of the biggest advantages? Relief from the scorching summer heat. Working in San Diego during June might seem mild, but standing nose-to-glass under direct sunlight can make the surface too hot to work on efficiently. That slows down the glass resurfacing process significantly.

Not nearly as uncomfortable, though, as another project I vividly remember—the heat and humidity from a summer job in Alabama, where I was drenched in sweat before 8 AM, long before many vacationers had even started their day.

A Rare Job in a Chilly 35–40°F Environment

The SeaWorld job offered something completely different: working inside a penguin enclosure where the temperature hovered around 35–40°F. No battling summer heat here! In fact, it was amusing to bundle up in the middle of June—a rare sight in sunny San Diego.

This cooling environment more than compensated for the challenges we faced, such as:

• Difficult access to the glass panels

• Deep scratches and algae buildup

• A tight timeframe to finish before the penguins returned

• Coordinating with other contractors whose work depended on ours

From Scratched and Cloudy to Crystal Clear

Before our work, the glass was marred with scratches and coated in algae, making it hard for visitors—especially children and shorter guests—to see the penguins underwater.

After our polishing and resurfacing process, the transformation was remarkable:

• The glass regained full clarity.

• The underwater views were restored.

• Visitors could once again enjoy one of SeaWorld’s most beloved exhibits without obstruction.
