Your storefront got tagged with acid etch. The glass company quoted you $2,000 for a replacement pane and a 3-week lead time. The property manager wants it fixed yesterday. Sound familiar?

Here's what most people don't realize: acid-etched graffiti can't be cleaned off because it isn't sitting on the glass. Hydrofluoric acid dissolves the silica structure of the glass itself, leaving thousands of microscopic pits below the original surface. No chemical, no solvent, no amount of scrubbing will reverse that. The only real fix is grinding past the damage and polishing back to full optical clarity.

That's what I do. I'm Doug MacDonald, founder of Glass Savers. I started this company in 2008 as a glass resurfacing specialist right here in San Diego. Seventeen years of hands-on glass restoration, and this city is where it all began. The domain name, sdglassrestoration.com, is named for San Diego for a reason.

Restoration saves 60-80% compared to the cost of full glass replacement. And your storefront is clear again in hours, not weeks.

How Acid Etch Graffiti Destroys Glass

Vandals spray or wipe hydrofluoric acid (HF) onto storefront glass. HF is one of the only chemicals that attacks glass at the molecular level. It breaks the silicon-oxygen bonds that give glass its transparency, leaving a frosted, cloudy pattern permanently etched into the pane.

That's why cleaning doesn't work. The damage isn't on the surface. It's in it.

Scratched graffiti is different but equally permanent. Vandals use carbide-tipped tools, rocks, or glass cutters to carve tags directly into the glass. These grooves are too deep for any polish to fill. Both types require the same solution: controlled grinding past the damage, then polishing back to clarity.

The Restoration Process

I use a multi-stage grinding and polishing sequence to remove the damaged layer of glass and restore it to like-new condition:

Assessment first. I map the full extent of the damage and test the depth. Most acid etch penetrates 10-30 microns into a pane that's 6,000 microns (6mm) thick. Removing that thin layer has zero impact on structural integrity.

Grinding. Starting with silicon carbide abrasives (Mirka Abralon discs), I grind past the deepest point of the acid damage. Feathering is critical here. I work 3-4 times the diameter of the damaged area so the repair blends invisibly into the surrounding glass. This is where inexperienced technicians fail. They grind only the damaged spot, and you end up with a visible divot.

Grit progression. I step through progressively finer grits (180, 360, 500, 1000) to smooth the grinding marks from each previous stage. Each grit expands the work area slightly to maintain that invisible blend. Rushing this or skipping grits creates haze.

Cerium oxide polish. The final stage uses 99%+ purity cerium oxide mixed with water to a milk-like slurry, applied with a hard felt pad on a variable-speed polisher at 1000-1500 RPM. This restores full optical clarity. Distortion-free.

Most storefront panes take 2-4 hours. Your business stays open the entire time.

Where San Diego Graffiti Hits Hardest

San Diego has a well-documented graffiti problem concentrated in its busiest commercial corridors:

Gaslamp Quarter. High foot traffic, tourism, and nightlife make this the number one target zone for glass vandalism in the county. Restaurant and bar owners deal with acid etch and scratched tags on a recurring basis. Replacing glass every time isn't sustainable.

North Park. The rapid growth of North Park's retail and restaurant scene has brought more storefront glass into the neighborhood. And more glass means more targets. Craft breweries, boutiques, and cafes along 30th Street and University Avenue see regular graffiti damage.

Hillcrest. Another high-traffic commercial district with a mix of older and newer storefronts. The combination of pedestrian activity and dense retail makes it a persistent target.

Downtown San Diego. Convention traffic, hotel frontage, and retail storefronts throughout downtown face the same problem. For the hospitality industry, visible graffiti damage on lobby glass or street-facing windows isn't just cosmetic. It sends the wrong message to guests and event attendees.

If your commercial property is in any of these areas, you've probably already seen the damage firsthand.

Why Replacement Doesn't Make Sense

The default response to graffiti damage is calling a glass company for replacement. Here's why that's the expensive option:

Cost. A single commercial pane costs $800-3,000+ to replace, factoring in glass, labor, and potential frame work. Restoration runs $225-600 per repair area. The math is clear.

Lead time. Custom commercial glass takes 2-6 weeks to fabricate and deliver. Your storefront looks vandalized the entire time. Restoration is same-day.

Repeat vandalism. Locations that get hit once tend to get hit again. Replacing a pane three or four times adds up fast. Restoration gives you the same result at a fraction of the cost, as many times as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does glass graffiti removal cost in San Diego?
  • Single storefront pane (acid etch or scratched graffiti): $225-$600
  • Multi-pane jobs: Individual quotes based on scope
  • Large-scale commercial projects: Custom pricing

Price depends on pane size and damage depth. Compare to replacement at $800-$3,000+ per repair area. Every job starts with a free estimate.

Can acid-etched graffiti really be removed completely?

Yes. The process grinds past the acid damage and polishes the glass back to full optical clarity. When feathering is done correctly, the restored area is identical to the surrounding glass. No haze, no waviness. Distortion-free.

How fast can you fix graffiti on a commercial storefront?

Most single-pane restorations take 2-4 hours. I can typically schedule graffiti removal within a few business days. For high-visibility locations in the Gaslamp Quarter, North Park, or downtown, I prioritize fast turnaround because I know the impact visible damage has on your business.

Do you handle both scratched and acid-etched graffiti?

Yes. Scratched graffiti (from carbide tools, rocks, glass cutters) and acid-etched graffiti (from hydrofluoric acid) both require grinding and polishing, but the starting grit and depth of removal differ. I assess each type during the estimate to give you an accurate price and timeline.

Is it worth restoring if we keep getting hit?

Yes. That's exactly when restoration makes the most financial sense. If you're paying $2,000+ for replacement every time someone tags your glass, and it happens two or three times a year, you're spending $4,000-6,000 on glass alone. Restoration at $225-600 per incident cuts that cost dramatically. Some of my San Diego clients have me on a regular rotation for exactly this reason.
