You found a scratch on your glass. Maybe a sliding door the dog got to, maybe a storefront panel tagged with graffiti, maybe a shower door that looks like someone went at it with sandpaper. Your first question is the same one everyone asks: how much is this going to cost to fix?

The short answer: glass scratch removal costs $300–$500 per repair area for localized damage. Widespread damage requiring full-surface resurfacing is priced at $30–$35 per sq ft of full panel dimensions. Large-scale commercial projects range from $5,000 to $50,000+ project total. These are real numbers from 17 years of quoting and completing restoration work, not marketing ranges designed to get you to call.

This guide breaks down exactly what drives the cost, what each type of job runs, and how to compare restoration pricing against replacement so you can make the right call.

What Determines the Price

Glass scratch removal isn't one-size-fits-all pricing. Four factors drive every quote.

1. Scratch Depth

This is the biggest cost factor. The deeper the scratch, the more grinding stages required, and more stages means more time.

The fingernail test tells you where you stand. Run your nail across the scratch:

Each grit stage takes time. A polish-only repair might take 15-20 minutes per panel. A full progression from 180 grit takes 45-90 minutes. That time difference is the price difference.

2. Area of Damage

A single scratch across a window is one thing. Acid-etched graffiti spread across 4 square feet is another. Pet scratches covering the bottom third of a sliding door fall somewhere in between.

More area means more grinding, more feathering (blending the repair into surrounding glass), and more polishing. A scratched tag that covers 6 square inches takes a fraction of the time that full-panel resurfacing does.

For detailed information on acid-etch graffiti specifically, see our Acid-Etched Graffiti Removal Process & Cost guide.

3. Glass Type

Standard annealed glass is straightforward. But glass type affects technique, and technique affects time.

Tempered glass requires more careful heat management during grinding. The rotary polisher generates friction heat, and tempered glass has internal stress that makes it more sensitive to temperature changes. Slower passes, more water, more frequent pauses. This adds time.

Low-E coated glass may have its coating on the damaged surface. The coating gets removed during grinding. The glass is restored to full clarity, but that coating layer is gone. Not a cost driver necessarily, but something you should know upfront.

Insulated (double-pane) units only need exterior surface work for scratches on the outer pane. Interior fogging between panes is a separate issue (seal failure) that restoration doesn't address.

4. Access and Location

Ground-floor storefront glass that I can walk up to and start working on is the simplest scenario. Second-story windows, interior atrium panels behind fixed furniture, or glass surrounded by landscaping that needs protection all add setup time.

For projects outside Austin and San Diego, travel applies. The nationwide minimum is $5,000.

Residential Pricing

These are 2026 ranges for the most common residential glass scratch repairs.

Single Window or Door Panel

Repair TypeTypical Cost
Localized scratch or cluster (single contained area, up to ~2 sq ft)$300–$500 per repair area
Widespread / full-surface resurfacing required$30–$35 per sq ft of full panel dimensions
Large-scale commercial projects (nationwide)$5,000–$50,000+ (project total)

Minimum charge: $500 for Austin and San Diego. Jobs between localized and widespread are quoted case by case.

Single-panel jobs are the bread and butter of residential glass restoration. A scratch from a piece of furniture bumping the glass, a key scratch on a window, a stray rock from a lawn mower. One panel, one repair, done in under an hour for most jobs.

Sliding Glass Doors

Sliding glass doors are one of the most common residential calls. Dogs and cats scratching at the glass leave clusters of light to moderate scratches across the lower third of the panel. The scratches are usually shallow (fingernail barely catches), but they cover enough area to require extended feathering.

See real examples: Dog Scratches in Sliding Glass Door Removed and Raccoon Scratches in Sliding Glass Door.

Shower Doors

Shower glass takes a beating from hard water mineral deposits and abrasive cleaning. The damage often looks worse than it is because mineral buildup creates a haze that makes underlying scratches appear deeper. Once the minerals are ground through and the glass is polished to a distortion-free finish, the result is usually dramatic.

Multi-Window Residential Projects

When multiple windows need work, the per-repair-area cost drops. Setup time is a fixed cost that gets spread across more panels. I'm already on-site with equipment staged. The savings are real, not just volume discount marketing.

Commercial Pricing

Commercial glass restoration pricing depends on scale, access, and project complexity.

Single Storefront Panel

Storefront glass is the most common commercial call. A vandal scratches a tag into the glass, acid etches a panel, or mineral deposits from sprinkler systems build up over time. Single-panel commercial jobs are priced similarly to residential because the work is the same. The glass doesn't care whether it's in a house or a store.

Multi-Panel Commercial

Graffiti events rarely hit just one window. When a building gets tagged, it's usually multiple panels overnight. Multi-panel pricing reflects the economy of a single mobilization covering many repairs.

Large-Scale and Institutional Projects

This is where restoration creates the biggest gap between repair and replacement cost. A commercial tower with 50 scratched panels isn't going to replace them at $2,000-5,000 per panel. That's a six-figure project before you factor in lead time, scaffolding, and tenant disruption.

Restoration on that same project? A fraction of the cost, completed on-site, with no glass fabrication wait.

Colin Itzko, CEO of IGM Inc., said it directly after a large-scale restoration project: "This fix by Doug saved hundreds of thousands of dollars in labor and materials, but more importantly TIME."

See large-scale project examples: 1,500 Square Feet of Glass Saved, Rancho Santa Fe and Palo Alto Glass Resurfacing.

Nationwide Travel

For projects outside Austin, TX and San Diego, CA, the minimum project size is $5,000. We travel to you. We've completed projects from Portland, Oregon to Augusta, Georgia and everywhere between.

Restoration vs. Replacement: The Real Comparison

This is the math that matters. Glass scratch restoration saves 60–80% compared to the cost of full glass replacement.

Scenario Replacement Cost Restoration Cost Savings
Residential window (localized scratch) $500–$1,500 $300–$500 per repair area 60–75%
Sliding glass door (localized pet scratches) $800–$2,000 $300–$500 per repair area 60–75%
Storefront panel (widespread) $1,000–$3,000 $30–$35/sq ft of panel 60–80%
6-panel commercial (project total) $6,000–$18,000 $1,200–$3,000 75–85%
50-panel commercial (project total) $100,000–$250,000 $10,000–$50,000 75–90%

Replacement costs include the glass itself, fabrication time (1-4 weeks for custom, tempered, or insulated units), installation labor, old glass disposal, and potential permit costs. And then there's the hidden cost: boarded-up or taped-over windows while you wait for fabrication. That's a customer impression problem for commercial properties and a security concern for residential ones.

Restoration happens the same day. No fabrication wait, no construction crew, no building permits, no disposal. The glass stays in the frame the entire time, and the finished result is distortion-free.

What a Legitimate Quote Looks Like

When you get a glass restoration quote, here's what to expect from a qualified vendor.

On-site or photo assessment. No one can give you an accurate price from a phone description alone. Either the technician comes to look at the damage, or you send clear photos showing the scratch depth (close-up with the fingernail test) and the overall extent of damage. Photos should include something for scale.

Itemized by panel. You should know what each panel costs, not just a lump-sum number. This matters when you're comparing against replacement quotes for specific panes.

No hidden costs. The quote should include all materials, labor, and travel. There shouldn't be a separate line item for cerium oxide or abrasive discs. Those are part of doing the job.

Insurance documentation. For commercial projects, your vendor should carry adequate liability insurance. Glass Savers carries $2M liability insurance and the ability to add your company as Additional Insured at no cost. If a vendor can't provide a Certificate of Insurance, that's a problem.

Timeline commitment. You should know when the work happens and how long it takes. Most single-panel jobs are under an hour. Multi-panel commercial jobs are typically completed in a single day.

Local Glass Scratch Removal Pricing

Labor rates, travel time, and market conditions vary by location. Here's what to know for our primary service areas.

Austin, TX: Glass Savers operates from Austin. No travel surcharge for anywhere in the Austin metro, including Steiner Ranch, Westlake Hills, Lakeway, Cedar Park, and surrounding communities. Austin's Very Hard water (15-20 grains per gallon) means hard water staining is one of the most common residential calls in the area. See our Austin Glass Restoration hub for local service details.

San Diego, CA: Glass Savers started in San Diego. We maintain active service in the San Diego metro including La Jolla, Rancho Santa Fe, Del Mar, and Encinitas. San Diego's coastal environment creates unique glass challenges from salt air corrosion and marine layer mineral deposits. See our San Diego Glass Restoration hub for local service details.

Nationwide: Projects meeting the $5,000 minimum. We handle travel logistics. You handle the access.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is glass scratch removal cheaper than replacing the glass?

Yes. Restoration saves 60–80% compared to the cost of full glass replacement. Localized repairs run $300–$500 per repair area; widespread damage is priced at $30–$35 per sq ft. A storefront panel that costs $1,000–$3,000 to replace is almost always cheaper to restore. The savings scale up on multi-panel projects where replacement would run into five or six figures.

How do you determine the price for my specific job?

Three factors: scratch depth (how much grinding is required), area of damage (how much glass surface needs work), and glass type (tempered glass takes more time than standard annealed). An on-site inspection or clear photos with the fingernail test give enough information for an accurate quote.

Do you charge differently for residential vs. commercial?

The work itself is the same. A scratch on storefront glass gets the same treatment as a scratch on a residential window. Commercial pricing reflects the scope (more panels, access requirements, documentation needs) rather than a different rate structure. Commercial projects also include Additional Insured certificates and detailed documentation at no extra charge.

What does the $5,000 nationwide minimum cover?

The minimum covers travel, lodging, and the restoration work itself for projects outside Austin and San Diego. There are no hidden travel surcharges beyond the minimum. If your project costs $5,000 or more based on the scope of work alone, the travel component is effectively included.

Can I get a quote from photos?

Yes, for most jobs. Send close-up photos of the damage (include the fingernail test so I can see depth) and wide shots showing the full extent. Include measurements or something for scale. This is usually enough for an accurate estimate. Complex or large-scale projects may require an on-site visit.

How long does the repair take?

Single-panel residential or commercial: 30-90 minutes depending on severity. Multi-panel commercial (4-6 panels): half a day. Large-scale projects (8-12+ panels): a full day. The work happens on-site with no glass removal required, so there's no fabrication wait time like there is with replacement.

How much does glass scratch removal cost?
  • Localized scratch or cluster (up to ~2 sq ft): $300–$500 per repair area
  • Widespread / full-surface resurfacing: $30–$35 per sq ft of full panel dimensions
  • Large-scale commercial projects (nationwide): $5,000–$50,000+ (project total)

Minimum charge: $500 for Austin and San Diego; $5,000 for out-of-town projects. Restoration saves 60–80% compared to full glass replacement.
