Austin's water is classified as "Very Hard" at 15-20 grains per gallon. That mineral content does real damage to glass over time, and no amount of scrubbing or chemical cleaners will undo it once it's set in.
If you've got white haze, cloudy spots, or crusty mineral buildup on your shower doors, windows near sprinkler lines, or pool-facing glass, you're dealing with hard water etching. The minerals have bonded with the glass surface at a molecular level. It's not sitting on top of the glass. It's in it.
Professional glass restoration removes the damaged layer and polishes the fresh surface underneath back to full clarity. Distortion-free results, done on-site, in hours instead of days.

Why Austin Is a Hard Water Problem City
Not every city has this problem to the same degree. Austin does. The 15-20 gpg mineral hardness puts Austin well above the "hard" classification and into "very hard" territory. That means higher concentrations of calcium, magnesium, and silica in every drop of water that touches your glass.
The areas hit hardest:
Steiner Ranch. Sprinkler systems throw mineral-heavy water onto windows regularly. The combination of high mineral content and Austin's intense sun accelerates the bonding process. I live in Steiner Ranch. I see it on homes throughout the neighborhood.
Lakeway. Lake-facing homes with large expanses of custom glass get hit by a combination of sprinkler overspray and lake moisture. The mineral buildup on shower doors and bathroom glass is consistent across the area.
Bee Cave and Westlake Hills. High-end homes with oversized glass panels, frameless shower enclosures, and pool-adjacent windows. The more glass surface exposed to water, the more opportunity for mineral deposits to set in.
Cedar Park. Newer construction with large windows. Homeowners often don't notice the buildup until it's been accumulating for a year or two, by which point it's too deep for surface cleaning.
The Scrubbing Trap
Here's what happens to almost every homeowner before they call me.
They notice the haze on their shower door or the white spots on a window near the sprinkler line. They try Windex. Nothing. They try vinegar. Maybe a slight improvement on the lightest deposits, but the real damage stays. They buy a "hard water stain remover" from the hardware store. Same result.
Then they escalate. Steel wool pads. Razor blades. Abrasive cleaning compounds. Magic erasers.
This is the scrubbing trap. You're now scratching the glass while failing to remove the stain. Every abrasive pad and blade leaves its own marks in the surface. When you finally give up and call a professional, the job is now harder because I'm removing both the mineral damage and the scratches from the cleaning attempts.
The fix isn't scrubbing harder. The fix is grinding through the damaged layer with the right tools and technique, then polishing back to clarity.

The process is the same one I use for scratch removal and graffiti repair. Glass restoration is a mechanical process using precision abrasives.
Assessment. I inspect the glass to determine how deep the mineral bonding goes. Light surface deposits that haven't etched into the silica might only need fine-grit work and polishing. Deep etching from years of exposure requires starting at a coarser grit.
Grinding. Using a 7" variable-speed rotary polisher with Mirka Abralon silicon carbide discs, I grind through the mineral-damaged layer. For most hard water stains, I start at 500 or 1000 grit. Severe cases with deep etching start at 360.
Feathering. Each progressively finer grit covers a wider area than the last. This blends the repair into the surrounding glass so there's no visible transition, no distortion, no waviness. Feathering is the technique that produces distortion-free results.
Cerium oxide polishing. The final stage. 99%+ purity cerium oxide mixed with water, applied with a hard felt pad. This restores full optical clarity. The glass looks the way it did when it was installed.
The entire process for a standard shower door takes 1-2 hours. Windows near sprinkler lines are usually 30-60 minutes each.
Common Austin Hard Water Jobs
Shower Doors and Enclosures
The most common residential call in Austin. Frameless shower glass shows every mineral deposit. The buildup is worst on the lower third of the glass where water pools and drips. Typical cost: $225-350 per repair area.
Windows Near Sprinkler Systems
Sprinkler overspray is the number one cause of hard water staining on exterior windows in Austin. The water hits the glass, evaporates in the Texas sun, and leaves minerals behind. Repeat that a few hundred times and you've got permanent white haze. Typical cost: $225-400 per window depending on severity.
Pool-Facing Glass
Pool splash, mist from water features, and humidity all deposit minerals on nearby glass surfaces. Homes in Lakeway and Steiner Ranch with pool-adjacent sliding doors and windows deal with this regularly.
Commercial Storefronts
Mineral deposits from building sprinkler systems and sidewalk cleaning build up on commercial glass. Property managers in downtown Austin see this on ground-floor panels that catch overspray. Typical cost: $225-600 per storefront panel.
Prevention After Restoration
Once the glass is restored, you can slow the return of mineral buildup.
Adjust sprinkler heads. This is the simplest fix and it's free. Point them away from windows. Most overspray problems can be reduced by 80% with a 15-minute adjustment.
Squeegee shower glass after use. Takes 30 seconds. Removes the water before it has time to evaporate and deposit minerals.
Apply a protective coating. Hydrophobic glass coatings cause water to bead and roll off rather than sitting on the surface. They don't last forever, but they extend the time between professional cleanings significantly.
The key: restore first, then protect. Applying a coating over existing mineral damage just locks the damage in.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can hard water stains really be removed from glass?
Yes. Hard water stains are mineral deposits that have bonded with the glass surface. Professional restoration grinds through the damaged layer with silicon carbide abrasive discs and polishes the glass underneath with cerium oxide. The result is clear, distortion-free glass with no trace of the mineral buildup.
Why didn't vinegar or CLR work on my glass?
Chemical cleaners can dissolve loose mineral deposits sitting on the surface. But once minerals etch into the silica structure of the glass itself, no chemical will reverse the damage. The glass surface has been physically altered. Fixing it requires physically removing that altered layer, which is what professional grinding does.
How much does hard water stain removal cost in Austin?
- Shower doors: $225-$350 per repair area
- Exterior windows (sprinkler damage): $225-$400 each
- Commercial storefronts: $225-$600 per repair area
Multi-window residential projects get better per-repair-area pricing since setup costs are spread across more glass.
Will the stains come back?
The hard water itself doesn't change, so yes, minerals will eventually deposit again if the glass is exposed to the same water. But adjusting sprinkler heads, squeegeeing shower glass, and applying protective coatings after restoration dramatically slow the process. Many homeowners go years between professional treatments once they address the source.
