Acid-etched glass graffiti cannot be cleaned off because the damage is in the glass, not on it. Glass Savers removes acid etch and scratched graffiti from Austin storefronts for $225-600 per repair area, saving 60-80% vs. replacement. Restored in hours, distortion-free.
* Minimum charge applies: $500 for local jobs in Austin and San Diego; $5,000 for out-of-town projects. Widespread damage priced at $30–$35/sq ft of full panel dimensions.

Someone hit your storefront with acid etch graffiti. You called a window cleaner. They tried chemicals, scrubbing, razor blades. Nothing worked. That's because acid etch graffiti isn't on the glass. It's in the glass.
Hydrofluoric acid eats thousands of microscopic pits into the silica structure of the glass surface. No cleaner in the world can reverse that chemical reaction. The only fix is grinding past the damage and polishing back to full optical clarity, distortion-free.
That's exactly what I do. I'm Doug MacDonald, founder of Glass Savers. I've been restoring damaged glass since 2008, starting as a glass resurfacing specialist on ladders in Southern California. Now based in Austin, I handle graffiti removal for storefronts, office buildings, and restaurants across the metro area.
Restoration saves 60-80% compared to the cost of full glass replacement. And your storefront is back to clear in hours, not the weeks it takes to order and install new glass.

How Acid Etch Graffiti Damages Glass
Vandals use hydrofluoric acid (HF), one of the few chemicals that attacks glass at the molecular level. When HF contacts a window, it dissolves the silica bonds in the surface. The result is a frosted, cloudy pattern etched permanently into the pane.
This isn't surface dirt. It's structural damage to the glass itself.
Standard graffiti removal methods fail because they're designed for paint, markers, or adhesives sitting on top of the glass. Acid etch sits below the original surface. You can't wipe it, scrub it, or dissolve it away. You have to go through it.
The Restoration Process
I use a controlled grinding and polishing sequence that removes a few microns of glass to get past the acid damage:
Step 1: Assessment. I map the damage area and test the depth. Most acid etch penetrates 10-30 microns into a pane that's 6,000 microns (6mm) thick. Removing that amount has zero structural impact.
Step 2: Grinding. Starting with coarse silicon carbide abrasives (Mirka Abralon discs), I grind past the deepest point of the acid damage. The key is feathering, working 3-4 times the diameter of the damaged area so the repair blends invisibly into the surrounding glass.
Step 3: Grit progression. I work through progressively finer grits (80, 180, 360, 500, 1000) to smooth out the grinding marks from the previous step. Skipping grits or rushing this stage is how inexperienced technicians create haze and distortion.
Step 4: Cerium oxide polish. The final stage uses 99%+ purity cerium oxide mixed with water to a milk-like slurry, applied with a hard felt pad on a variable-speed polisher. This restores full optical clarity. Distortion-free.
The whole process takes 2-4 hours per pane for most storefronts. Your business stays open during the work.

Where Austin Graffiti Hits Hardest
Austin's commercial graffiti problem is concentrated in a few well-known zones:
Downtown Austin and East 6th Street. High foot traffic, late-night activity, and dense storefronts make this the primary target zone. Bar and restaurant owners on 6th Street deal with acid etch attacks regularly.
Rainey Street District. The mix of older residential-converted-to-commercial buildings and newer construction creates a patchwork of glass types. All of them are vulnerable to HF acid.
East Austin. As the area has grown commercially, so has the graffiti problem. Newer storefronts with large glass facades are prime targets.
If you own or manage property in these areas, you've probably already seen it. And you know that leaving acid etch graffiti on your glass invites more of it.
Why Replacement Is the Wrong Call
The instinct is to call a glass company and replace the pane. Here's why that's usually a mistake:
Cost. A single commercial storefront pane runs $800-3,000+ for replacement, including glass, labor, and potential frame modifications. Restoration costs $225-600 per repair area.
Time. Custom commercial glass takes 2-6 weeks to fabricate and ship. Your storefront looks damaged the entire time. Restoration is done the same day I show up.
Repeat attacks. If your location gets hit once, it will likely get hit again. Paying for full replacement every time is not sustainable. Restoration gives you the same result at a fraction of the cost, every time.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does glass graffiti removal cost in Austin?
- Standard storefront pane: $225-$600
Price depends on pane size and damage depth. Multi-pane jobs and large-scale commercial projects are quoted individually. Every job starts with a free estimate.
Can you remove both scratched and acid-etched graffiti?
Yes. Scratched graffiti (from rocks, keys, or glass cutters) and acid-etched graffiti (from hydrofluoric acid) both require grinding and polishing, but the depth and approach differ. I assess each type during the estimate.
Will the repair be visible?
No. When done correctly with proper feathering technique, the restored area is optically identical to the surrounding glass. No haze, no waviness, no visual artifacts. That's what distortion-free means.
How quickly can you respond to a graffiti emergency?
I'm based in Austin and can typically schedule graffiti removal within a few business days. For commercial properties in high-visibility areas, I prioritize fast turnaround.
Do you offer anti-graffiti film installation?
I focus on glass restoration, not film installation. But I can advise you on whether anti-graffiti film makes sense for your situation. For some properties it's a good preventive layer. For others, the math favors restoration as-needed.
