Yes. Completely. Every last scratch.
If your dog has been pawing at the sliding glass door, you're looking at clusters of scratches across the lower third of the panel. It looks awful. You assume the door needs to be replaced. You look up the cost and realize it's $1,000-3,000+ for a single panel, more if it's a premium sliding door system like Fleetwood or La Cantina.
You don't need a new door. You need a glass restoration technician.
Professional pet scratch removal grinds through the damaged surface layer of the glass and polishes it back to full optical clarity. Distortion-free. The scratches are gone, not hidden or filled, but physically removed. The glass looks like it did before your dog discovered the squirrel on the other side.
I'm Doug MacDonald, founder of Glass Savers. I've been restoring scratched glass for 17 years. Pet scratch calls are some of my most common residential jobs, and homeowners are consistently surprised that this service exists at all. Most people assume replacement is the only option.
It's not.

Why Dogs Scratch Glass
Dogs scratch sliding glass doors for predictable reasons. Understanding the pattern helps explain the damage and plan prevention.
Wanting in or out. The most common cause. Your dog sees you on the other side and paws at the door. This happens dozens of times a day, and each time those nails drag across the glass. Over months, the scratches accumulate until they're impossible to ignore.
Reacting to wildlife. Squirrels, birds, lizards, cats, rabbits. Anything moving on the other side of the glass triggers a reaction. The dog lunges and paws at the glass. This produces the most aggressive scratches because the pawing is frantic and repetitive.
Separation anxiety. Dogs left alone often focus their anxiety on door glass. The pawing is persistent and concentrated, producing dense clusters of scratches in the same area day after day.
Excited greetings. Your dog hears you pull into the driveway and goes to the sliding door. Paws up, nails on glass, every single time you come home.
The result is always the same: a section of glass covered in scratch clusters, typically concentrated on the lower 18-36 inches of the panel.
The Fingernail Test
Before calling anyone, run your fingernail across the scratches.
Nail doesn't catch. Surface scuffs. The lightest damage. These polish out with cerium oxide alone, no grinding needed. Fastest repair, lowest cost.
Nail catches lightly. Moderate scratches. The damage has penetrated into the glass surface. These start at a mid-range grit (500 or 1000) and progress through polishing. Most dog scratches fall here.
Nail catches firmly. Deep scratches. Less common with pets, but it happens with large breeds that have thick, rough nails. These require the full grit progression starting at 180 or 360. Still completely repairable.
If the glass isn't cracked or chipped, the scratches come out. Every time.
How Pet Scratch Restoration Works
The repair process is identical to the one used for graffiti removal, hard water damage, and post-construction scratches. Glass restoration is glass restoration. The tools and technique don't change based on what caused the damage.
Step 1: Assessment. I check scratch depth with the fingernail test, identify the affected area, and determine the starting grit.
Step 2: Grinding. Using a variable-speed rotary polisher with Mirka Abralon silicon carbide discs, I grind through the scratched layer. Starting grit depends on depth. The scratches disappear because I'm removing the damaged glass surface entirely, not buffing over them.
Step 3: Grit progression. Each finer grit erases the scratch pattern left by the previous disc. 180, 360, 500, 1000. You never skip grits.
Step 4: Feathering. Each progressively finer grit covers a wider area than the last. This blends the repair into the surrounding glass with no visible edge, dip, or distortion. Feathering is the technique that makes distortion-free results possible. Skip it, and you get a visible patch.
Step 5: Cerium oxide polish. 99%+ purity cerium oxide mixed with water, applied with a hard felt pad at 1000-1500 RPM. This restores full optical clarity.
Most pet scratch repairs on a single sliding door panel take 1-2 hours. The door stays in the frame. The work happens on-site.

Tempered Glass: The Myth That Costs Homeowners Money
Most sliding glass doors use tempered glass. There's a persistent myth that tempered glass can't be resurfaced. That myth costs homeowners thousands in unnecessary replacements every year.
Tempered glass can be restored. The process requires more careful heat management during grinding, because tempered glass has internal stress patterns that react to concentrated heat. Lower RPM, more water, and slower passes handle that. The results are the same: complete scratch removal with distortion-free clarity.
I've resurfaced hundreds of tempered glass panels. The myth likely started because inexperienced technicians cracked a tempered panel by grinding too fast without enough water. That's a technique problem, not a material limitation.
Preventing Future Scratches
Getting the glass restored is step one. Keeping it scratch-free is step two.
Trim nails regularly. This is the single biggest factor. Short, smooth nails do far less damage than long, rough ones. A consistent grooming schedule prevents most pet scratch damage from recurring.
Apply a protective film. A clear sacrificial film on the lower portion of the glass absorbs future scratching. When it gets marked up, you peel it off and apply a new one. The glass underneath stays untouched. Film replacement runs $225-100, far less than another restoration visit.
Use a screen or barrier. A screen door or pet-proof barrier between the dog and the glass eliminates contact entirely. This works best for dogs with separation anxiety who paw at the door when left alone.
Train door behavior. Easier said than done with some dogs, but teaching them not to paw at the glass solves the root problem.
The practical approach for most pet owners: restore the glass, keep the nails trimmed, and add film if your dog is a persistent pawer. That combination keeps most sliding doors scratch-free for years.
Not Just Dogs
I've removed scratches from glass caused by cats (less common, but it happens on window sills), raccoons, and other wildlife. The raccoon jobs are memorable because the damage pattern is distinctive. Raccoons have strong, sharp claws and they rake them across glass in long, aggressive strokes.
The process is the same regardless of the animal. Glass doesn't care what scratched it. Scratches are scratches.

Local Pet Scratch Repair
Austin, TX: Westlake Hills, Steiner Ranch, Lakeway, and Cedar Park are where I get the most pet scratch calls. Large-breed dogs and premium sliding door systems are a consistent combination. See Dog & Pet Scratch Glass Repair in Austin.
San Diego, CA: Luxury sliding door systems in La Jolla, Del Mar, and Rancho Santa Fe are particularly costly to replace. A single panel on a Fleetwood system can run $3,000-5,000+. Restoration at $300-500 per repair area makes far more financial sense. See Dog & Pet Scratch Glass Repair in San Diego.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can dog scratches really be removed from glass?
Yes. Dog scratches are physical damage to the glass surface. Professional grinding with silicon carbide discs removes the damaged layer entirely, and cerium oxide polishing restores full optical clarity. The result is distortion-free glass with no evidence of the original scratches. Not hidden, not filled. Removed.
Will the repair weaken my sliding glass door?
No. A standard glass pane is 6mm thick, which is 6,000 microns. Pet scratch removal takes off 50-100 microns of material. That's less than 2% of the total thickness. The glass retains full structural integrity.
How long does pet scratch repair take?
Most single-panel repairs take 1-2 hours. The door stays in the frame. The work happens on-site. Multi-panel sliding door systems are usually completed in a single visit.
My dog will just scratch it again. Is it worth repairing?
Yes. At $225-500 for restoration versus $1,000-5,000+ for replacement, you can restore the glass multiple times before matching the cost of a single new panel. Combining restoration with regular nail trimming and protective film keeps most doors scratch-free between treatments.
Do you work on tempered glass sliding doors?
Yes. Most sliding doors use tempered glass, and tempered glass can be resurfaced. It requires more careful heat management during grinding, but the results are identical: complete scratch removal with distortion-free clarity.
Can you fix scratches from cats or other animals?
Yes. The process is the same for any animal scratch. Glass restoration removes the damaged layer regardless of what caused it. Cat scratches, raccoon scratches, and wildlife damage all get the same treatment.
How much does pet scratch glass door repair cost?
Pet scratch glass door repair typically costs:
- Light scratches, single panel: $225-300
- Moderate to heavy scratches, single panel: $300-500
- Multi-panel slider (2-3 panels): $400-500+
- Premium sliding door systems (Fleetwood, La Cantina): $300-500 per repair area
Compared to replacement costs of $800-5,000+ per repair area, restoration saves 60-80%.
