Post-construction glass scratches from razor blades, stucco splatter, welding slag, and fabrication debris can be restored on-site in San Diego without replacing the glass. Glass Savers has repaired construction glass damage since 2008, saving 60-80% vs. replacement with $2M liability insurance.
Your build is finished. The walkthrough is scheduled. And now there are scratches on the glass that weren't there six months ago.
This is the part of construction nobody budgets for, but every project deals with. It doesn't matter if it's a $4 million custom home in La Jolla or a mixed-use development in downtown San Diego. Glass gets damaged during construction. Every time.
Razor blades leave marks when crews strip protective film and tape. Stucco splatter bonds to surfaces during exterior finishing. Welding slag from structural steel burns into glass on contact. And fabrication debris, those microscopic silica and metal particles baked into tempered glass at the factory, creates scratch patterns the first time anyone cleans the windows.
You don't need to rip out and replace that glass. You need someone who knows how to restore it.
I'm Doug MacDonald, founder of Glass Savers. I've been doing this since 2008, when I started as a glass resurfacing specialist on ladders in Southern California. San Diego is where this business was born. The "SD" in sdglassrestoration.com stands for San Diego. After 17 years of hands-on work, I've repaired construction glass damage on everything from single residential panes to estate-scale projects spanning 1,500 square feet of glass.
Restoration saves 60-80% compared to the cost of full glass replacement. On construction projects where margins are already tight and deadlines are already past, that's the kind of math that matters.
Glass Savers carries $2M liability insurance and can add your company as Additional Insured at no cost. Certificates provided before work starts.

The Damage Catalog: Four Ways Construction Destroys Glass
Razor Blade Scratches
The most common culprit. Workers use razor blades to remove tape, stickers, labels, and protective film from new glass. On tempered glass, those blades drag across microscopic fabrication debris particles embedded in the surface during manufacturing. The result is visible scratch patterns across the entire pane.
The worker didn't do anything wrong. The blade pushed factory-embedded particles across the glass surface. It's a known issue in the glass industry. And it's fixable without replacing a single panel.
Stucco and Concrete Splatter
San Diego's coastal construction often features stucco exteriors. During application, fine particles land on nearby glass. If they're not removed immediately, the stucco bonds as it cures. Scraping cured stucco off glass creates its own set of scratches. It's a cycle that ends with professional restoration, not more scraping.
Welding Slag
Structural steel work throws hot metal particles. When welding slag lands on glass, it fuses to the surface instantly. You can't scrape it off without creating deeper damage. I've restored welding slag damage across San Diego, including jobs where contractors assumed the glass was a total loss.

Fabrication Debris
This is the one that starts arguments on job sites. During the tempering process, tiny silica and metal particles from furnace rollers get baked into the glass surface at the factory. These particles are invisible until something drags across them. A razor blade. A squeegee. A cleaning pad.
The glass arrives on-site looking perfect. The first post-construction cleaning creates scratches that appear to come from nowhere. The glass manufacturer says it happened on-site. The contractor says their crew didn't cause it. Both sides are partially right.
Fabrication debris is a manufacturing issue, but the scratches don't show until the glass is handled. The good news: the glass doesn't need replacement. It needs restoration.

San Diego's luxury residential market runs on glass. Floor-to-ceiling ocean views in La Jolla. Custom estate homes in Rancho Santa Fe with hundreds of square feet of architectural glass. New construction in Encinitas and Del Mar where every window faces salt air and coastal light.
When those windows get damaged during construction, the replacement quotes are staggering. Custom panels for high-end homes can cost thousands per pane and take weeks to fabricate. On a project where the client is already waiting to move in, that timeline doesn't work.
La Jolla and Del Mar. Luxury new construction with oversized glass panels and ocean views. Replacing custom glass here means re-ordering from the fabricator, waiting for production, scheduling installation, and hoping the new panel matches the existing ones. Restoration happens on-site, usually in a single visit.
Rancho Santa Fe. Estate-scale homes with massive glass footprints. I've worked projects in Rancho Santa Fe where the glass area exceeded 1,500 square feet. Restoration saved the project from a replacement bill that would have run well into six figures.
Encinitas. Steady construction activity with a mix of custom residential and smaller commercial projects. I've restored construction scratches on multiple Encinitas jobs, bringing damaged glass back to distortion-free clarity without pulling a single panel.

How the Restoration Process Works
I use a controlled grinding and polishing sequence on every construction glass job:
Silicon carbide abrasive discs (Mirka Abralon, foam-backed) start at a coarse grit to grind past the damage layer. I progress through finer grits, working from 80 up through 180, 360, 500, and 1000. Then cerium oxide polishing with a hard felt pad on a variable-speed rotary polisher brings back full optical clarity.
The technique that separates professional work from amateur attempts is feathering. I work an area 3-4 times the diameter of the damaged spot so the repair blends invisibly into the surrounding glass. Without proper feathering, you get a visible repair zone that catches light differently than the rest of the pane. With it, you get a distortion-free surface that looks like the glass was never touched.
Timing depends on the scope. A single residential window takes 30-60 minutes. Large commercial panels run 1-2 hours each. Multi-pane construction projects get a full timeline with the estimate.
Insurance and Documentation for Contractors
Post-construction glass repair is a liability-sensitive service. General contractors need vendors with proper coverage. Glass Savers carries $2M liability insurance and can add your company as Additional Insured at no cost. Certificates of insurance are provided on request, before any work begins.
I also document damage with photos and can provide a professional assessment of whether scratches are consistent with fabrication debris, job-site handling, or post-construction cleaning damage. This documentation is useful for warranty disputes between builders, glazing contractors, and glass manufacturers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you fix construction glass damage without replacing the glass?
Yes. Razor blade scratches, stucco splatter, welding slag, and fabrication debris scratches are all repairable through professional grinding and polishing. The process removes only microns of glass from a surface that's 6,000 microns thick. The result is distortion-free clarity that matches the original glass.
How much does post-construction glass repair cost compared to replacement?
Restoration saves 60-80% compared to replacement. The exact cost depends on the number of panes, type and severity of damage, and glass accessibility. Glass Savers provides free on-site estimates for all San Diego construction projects.
Do you carry insurance for working on construction sites?
Glass Savers carries $2M liability insurance and can add your company as Additional Insured at no cost. Certificates of insurance are issued before work starts. This is standard practice for any vendor working on active or recently completed construction sites.
How quickly can you complete a post-construction glass project?
Single panes take 30-60 minutes. Full building projects are scheduled based on scope, but most residential construction cleanups are completed in a single visit. I coordinate directly with your site superintendent on timing and access.
What areas of San Diego do you serve for construction glass repair?
I serve all of San Diego County, including La Jolla, Rancho Santa Fe, Encinitas, Del Mar, and surrounding communities. San Diego is where Glass Savers started, and I've been restoring glass here since 2008.
