Razor Blade Scratches

The most common culprit. Workers use razor blades to remove tape, stickers, labels, and protective film from new glass. On tempered glass, those blades drag across microscopic fabrication debris particles embedded in the surface during manufacturing. The result is visible scratch patterns across the entire pane.

The worker didn't do anything wrong. The blade pushed factory-embedded particles across the glass surface. It's a known issue in the glass industry. And it's fixable without replacing a single panel.

Stucco and Concrete Splatter

San Diego's coastal construction often features stucco exteriors. During application, fine particles land on nearby glass. If they're not removed immediately, the stucco bonds as it cures. How the Restoration Process Works

I use a controlled grinding and polishing sequence on every construction glass job:

Silicon carbide abrasive discs (Mirka Abralon, foam-backed) start at a coarse grit to grind past the damage layer. I progress through finer grits, working from 80 up through 180, 360, 500, and 1000. Then cerium oxide polishing with a hard felt pad on a variable-speed rotary polisher brings back full optical clarity.

The technique that separates professional work from amateur attempts is feathering. I work an area 3-4 times the diameter of the damaged spot so the repair blends invisibly into the surrounding glass. Without proper feathering, you get a visible repair zone that catches light differently than the rest of the pane. With it, you get a distortion-free surface that looks like the glass was never touched.

Timing depends on the scope. A single residential window takes 30-60 minutes. Large commercial panels run 1-2 hours each. Multi-pane construction projects get a full timeline with the estimate.
