Post-construction glass damage from razor blades, stucco splatter, welding slag, and fabrication debris can be repaired without replacement. Glass Savers restores construction-damaged glass in Austin, TX, saving 60-80% vs. replacement. $2M insured with Additional Insured available.
The build is done. The punch list is open. And someone just noticed the glass is scratched.
This happens on every construction project. It doesn't matter how careful the crew was. Glass gets damaged during construction. Razor blades leave marks when removing stickers and protective film. Stucco and concrete splatter during exterior finishing. Welding slag from structural steel burns into glass surfaces. And fabrication debris, tiny silica and metal particles baked into tempered glass during manufacturing, shows up as fine scratches that no amount of cleaning will remove.
You don't need to replace that glass. You need someone who can fix it.
I'm Doug MacDonald, founder of Glass Savers. I started in 2008 as a glass resurfacing specialist on ladders in Southern California. After 17 years of hands-on glass restoration, I've fixed construction glass damage on projects ranging from single-family homes to large commercial buildings.
Restoration saves 60-80% compared to the cost of full glass replacement. On a construction project with tight margins and tighter deadlines, that matters.
Glass Savers carries $2M liability insurance and can add your company as Additional Insured at no cost.

The Four Types of Construction Glass Damage
Razor Blade Scratches
The most common source of construction glass damage. Workers use razor blades to remove tape residue, stickers, labels, and protective film from new glass. On tempered glass, those blades drag across microscopic fabrication debris particles embedded in the surface, leaving visible scratch patterns.
The scratches aren't from the blade being dull or the worker being careless. They're from the blade pushing factory-embedded particles across the glass. This is a known issue in the glass industry, and it's fixable.
Stucco and Concrete Splatter
Exterior stucco application sends fine particles onto nearby glass surfaces. If not removed immediately, stucco bonds with the glass as it cures. Scraping cured stucco off glass creates more scratches. The fix isn't better scraping. It's professional resurfacing that removes the splatter damage and restores the surface to distortion-free clarity.
Welding Slag
Structural steel work throws hot metal particles. When welding slag lands on glass, it fuses to the surface on contact. You can't scrape it off without gouging the glass. Restoration grinds past the damage point and polishes back to optical clarity.
Fabrication Debris
This is the one most people don't know about. During the tempering process, tiny silica and metal particles from the furnace rollers get baked into the glass surface at the factory. These particles are invisible until something drags across them, like a razor blade, a squeegee, or a cleaning pad.
The glass arrives at your job site looking perfect. Then the first cleaning creates scratches that appear to come from nowhere. The glass manufacturer will often claim the damage happened on-site. The contractor insists their crew didn't cause it. Both are partially right.
Fabrication debris is a manufacturing defect, but the scratches don't appear until the glass is handled. Either way, the glass is fixable without replacement.

Austin's construction market has been running hot for years. New residential developments in Cedar Park, commercial projects downtown, mixed-use buildings across East Austin. Every one of these projects has glass, and every one of them produces glass damage.
Cedar Park and Round Rock. New subdivision construction creates high volumes of post-construction glass damage. Homeowners move in, notice scratches on their windows, and call the builder. The builder calls a glass company. The glass company quotes replacement. That's where I come in with a faster, cheaper fix.
Downtown Austin. Commercial tower construction involves large glass panels, often custom-fabricated. Replacing a single custom panel can cost thousands and take weeks. Restoration costs a fraction and happens the same week.
General contractors on tight schedules. The certificate of occupancy is pending. The owner walkthrough is Thursday. You can't wait 4 weeks for replacement glass. Restoration closes that punch list item in hours.
"This fix by Doug saved hundreds of thousands of dollars in labor and materials, but more importantly TIME." - Colin Itzko, CEO of IGM Inc.
The Restoration Process
I use the same controlled grinding and polishing process on construction damage that I use on every glass restoration job:
Silicon carbide abrasive discs (Mirka Abralon, foam-backed) start at a coarse grit to grind past the damage. I progress through finer grits (80, 180, 360, 500, 1000) to smooth the surface. Then cerium oxide polishing with a hard felt pad on a variable-speed polisher brings back full optical clarity.
The critical technique is feathering. I work an area 3-4 times the diameter of the damaged spot so the repair blends invisibly into the surrounding glass. Skip the feathering, and you get a visible repair. That's the difference between professional work and a DIY attempt.
Standard residential window: 30-60 minutes. Large commercial panels: 1-2 hours per pane. Full construction project with multiple panes: I'll give you a timeline with the estimate.
Distortion-free results. Every time.
Insurance That Matters to Contractors
Construction glass repair is a liability-sensitive service. General contractors need vendors who carry proper coverage. Glass Savers carries $2M liability insurance and can add your company as Additional Insured at no cost. Certificates of insurance provided on request, before work begins.
This isn't a differentiator I mention for marketing purposes. It's a requirement for working on construction sites, and I treat it that way.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who pays for post-construction glass repair, the builder or the homeowner?
It depends on the contract and warranty terms. On new construction, the builder typically covers glass damage found during the punch list or warranty period. I work with both builders and homeowners directly.
Can you fix scratches on tempered glass?
Yes. There's a common myth that tempered glass can't be resurfaced. It can. Tempered glass requires more careful heat management during grinding, but the results are identical: distortion-free clarity.
How do you handle fabrication debris claims?
I document the damage with photos and can provide a professional assessment of whether scratches are consistent with fabrication debris patterns. This documentation helps in warranty disputes between builders, glazing contractors, and glass manufacturers.
Can you work around an active construction schedule?
Yes. I coordinate with your site superintendent on timing and access. I need power and water access at the glass location. The work doesn't generate dust, debris, or noise that would interfere with other trades.
What's the minimum project size you'll take on?
No minimum for Austin-area construction projects. Whether it's a single scratched pane on a residential build or an entire building of damaged panels, I'll provide an estimate.
